I’m not from Glasgow but I’ve lived there for the last 13 years. Long enough.
The Barrowlands is one of those places folk always talk about. The thing is it actually lives up to it’s reputation. I picked the picture because of the wet street and because it’s usually raining in Glasgow.
It’s an old ballroom. The floor is sprung and the ceiling is domed with stars painted on it. This suits every type of gig: it’s loud as fuck. Those boys knew what they were doing when they designed it ‘for the dancing’.
There are less and less gigs at the place these days. Clear Channel and similar could be to blame but the general homogenisation of the music industry and all culture is a more likely reason. Who wants to go and listen to music at the 02000 ultra idome anyway? Not the punters and the band don’t want to play there (if they knew the alternative was actually infinitely better).
Occasionally bands request to play there because they know it’s one of the best venues going. I saw Grinderman there recently. It was loud and good. I got drunk and felt nostalgic about Glasgow before I’d even left for London.
