Parp

Sei A had a track released on Kompact extra recently. We were never ones to blow our own horns but a record on Kompact is fucking cool. Well done that man!

Appropriately the A side, Hawk Tone, has one of the best rave parps I’ve heard for a while. It’s reminiscent of Fizheuer Zieheuer with a bit more subtlety and that trademark Sei A sound design. Can’t wait to hear this on a big system.

Lost in Tokyo

Koreless’ music has a timeless aspect to it. This tune rose up a little while ago but it’s getting a release now. Buy it from a record shop.

Remember this?

Probably not unless you’re over 30.

This thing came out in 1994 by the self-styled “Baron of techno”, Dave Clarke. The memory of this song, if it’s really a song, floated a little smirk across my blank commuter stare this morning as I traveled to my office job in South London. I’ve no comprehension of why it arose today. It’s just a heavy beat with the odd backwards drum sound, in fact there’s little point trying to describe this or most techno of that era. It’s really fucking heavy and functional noise.

I know that I first heard this kind of music in it’s proper setting at a manky techno club in Edinburgh. I think the club was called Normal. I’m not sure. I remember the night being full of intense Edinburgh neds with no teeth, tracksuits and scarier girlfriends.

I picked this record up sometime after in a second-hand shop. This type of music and Dave Clarke was unfashionable by then but it was meaningful to me and I knew it was a bargain at £4. The inner sleeve has someone’s scribbled name on it. Davey 90s Techno or such like. Perhaps so Davey’s version wasn’t assimilated in a household of techno records? Maybe Davey was just proud of his records as I am to own such a relic with real history. I wonder if he works in an office now?

Spring

Winter is receding faster than my hairline and summer in London is becoming pleasantly inevitable rather than a horrible rumour. I’m looking forward to all the good things: jerk chicken, Red Stripe in the afternoon turning into a night out, London looking alluring rather than grey and all my friends, together.

Here’s hoping.

It was all a dream

Biggie smalls would have been 40 today!

Here’s an insightful article on Notorious B.I.G, pictures of his stomping grounds and quotes from his old pals.

How ya livin’ Biggie Smalls?
